Caring in the core

Caring in the Core launched last week with its inaugural volunteer day event. The staff-led initiative was envisioned several months ago, when Hamilton Health Sciences (HHS) was planning a major relocation of more than 300 staff to 100 King St. West in downtown Hamilton. The move was seen as an opportunity to connect with the community, and give back to organizations that are supporting Hamilton’s core.

“As a hospital, we provide medical care to our community, but we know health is about much more than that,” says Tom Perry, a public relations specialist at HHS leading the Caring in the Core project. “We wanted to give staff a chance to contribute to some of the other incredible organizations that support the health of people in our area.”

“It’s great to see that leveraged in a really tangible way that our tenants can see.”

Caring in the Core’s first volunteer outing was a maintenance day at Indwell, a charity that provides affordable housing communities to support people seeking health, wellness and belonging.

“Hamilton Health Sciences is a partner in health for us,” says Jeffrey Neven, executive director at Indwell. “It’s great to see that leveraged in a really tangible way that our tenants can see.”

A group of 18 HHS volunteers spent a day at one of Indwell’s Hamilton properties, gardening, cleaning and painting. Neven says it’s important for his organization to provide a standard of housing that tenants are proud to live in; it contributes to their overall well-being. It’s with help from volunteers that Indwell is able to maintain this standard.

“It was a great day for us to connect with our community and make a direct impact,” Perry says. “All the staff members that took part really enjoyed the experience and we’re looking forward to our next event.”

Caring in the Core plans to run quarterly volunteer outings. You can send suggestions for volunteer opportunities that can accommodate a large group to caringinthecore@hhsc.ca.
