Introducing… a medical director

Dr. Gary Benson is medical director at West Lincoln Memorial Hospital (WLMH). He has had medical staff privileges at WLMH and Hamilton Health Sciences (HHS) for over 40 years.

Favourite colour: red /book: Sailing Alone Around the World by Joshua Slocum /vacation spot: Australia /music: all forms, especially jazz and classical /animal: the family dog, of which we have had many /food: seafood of any kind

Tell us about your first day at HHS.
I’ve had privileges at HHS for many years, however my first day as medical director was three years ago. The first day of amalgamation came with the realization that there was a tremendous amount of work ahead as we began integration of WLMH as a site of HHS.

What do you love most about your job?
I enjoy being part of a team and working with very dedicated people.

Describe one of your most challenging days at work.
There are many challenging days at work and many of them involve the ongoing efforts to gain approval for the redevelopment of WLMH.

What are your favourite ways to spend your free time?
In the winter I enjoy woodworking/turning and reading; in the summertime I play golf and sail.

Tell us about your most gratifying experience at HHS.
Planning for the future of healthcare in our region, with an emphasis on maintaining and improving the model of care in West Niagara which has a very strong emphasis on family medicine.
