Intensive care for the tiniest newborns

Welcoming a new baby into the world is an exciting time for families. When complications arise during pregnancy or after delivery, it can be very stressful and overwhelming for new parents. Timely access to specialized neonatal care is essential to ensure the best possible outcome for the newborn and family.

The Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at McMaster Children’s Hospital (MCH) is the only centre in our region offering highly specialized care for infants with a wide range of conditions.

“We care for babies who are born extremely premature and may weigh as little as one pound,” explains Kim Felker, the clinical manager of the NICU. “We also care for newborns who are experiencing a range of health complications or illnesses that require immediate attention and specialized neonatal care.”

Interdisciplinary care

Kim cites a wide range of interdisciplinary team members in the NICU including neonatologists, neonatal fellows, registered nurses, respiratory therapists, nurse practitioners, occupational therapists, pharmacists, dietitians, dietetic assistants, lactation consultants, health care aides, business clerks and social workers. The NICU team also works very closely with the team in the Women’s Reproductive Health and Newborn Care Program at McMaster University Medical Centre.

“We strongly believe in family-centered care here in the NICU.”

“Having such a robust, talented and dedicated team is one thing that makes the NICU at MCH so special and important as a referral centre for our region,” she says.

Focusing on families

“We strongly believe in family-centered care here in the NICU,” Kim explains. “We care for the whole family, not only the baby.”

The NICU team also provides emotional support to parents through the different stages of the patient journey.

“It’s really inspiring to work alongside such amazing team members in the NICU with an incredible passion for what they do. Together, we are making a difference.”
