What made you enter your field of work? I knew I always wanted to do something in health care and I wanted as many options at my disposal as possible. Although nursing was not the “stereotypical” path to choose, it fit all of my criteria. I always knew that I wanted to pursue further education after completing my undergraduate degree but I knew I wasn’t interested in pursuing a career as a physician. After working within pediatrics for several years, becoming a pediatric nurse practitioner was a natural path. After completing my NP, I was able to pursue additional education in anesthesia, which had always been an interest of mine since entering the profession.
“Although nursing was not the “stereotypical” path to choose, it fit all of my criteria.”
What do you love most about your job? I love utilizing the knowledge and skills I developed through my training and applying this knowledge on a daily basis. I love the variety and unpredictability of my job. I never really know what is going to happen on any given day. I also like that I work in a variety of different areas in the hospital and have the opportunity to work with a diverse group of patient populations. Like most people who enter health care, I also enjoy interacting with patients and strive to provide the best care possible.
Do you have a best friend or confidant at HHS? Tell us about him/her. I have a couple close friends at work and I am fortunate enough to be part of an outstanding group of NPs at HHS, more specifically an outstanding group of Pediatric NPs. The pediatric NP group has grown quite a bit since I joined and it is amazing to be part of something that has such a positive impact in providing patient care. I often turn to many of the pediatric NPs for advice, support, feedback, and mentorship.
What are your favourite ways to spend your free time? I enjoy doing outside activities as much as possible. I am an avid rock climber and have travelled over Canada, the U.S. and Mexico to go climbing. I also enjoy spending time with friends and family.
What do you eat to keep you energized at work? My go-to for a quick snack is tea biscuits or Premium Plus crackers from the cafeteria.
Tell us about your most gratifying experience at HHS. My role involves working closely amongst a diverse team of healthcare providers. The most gratifying experiences I have had are when we work smoothly and seamlessly together as a team to provide the best patient care possible.
