Transforming the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit

The Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) at McMaster Children’s Hospital has implemented an innovative evidenced based care bundle, called PICU Liber8, to reduce complications experienced by children surviving critical illness.

These complications can lead to significant disabilities that can contribute to poor long term recovery. This video shares the journey to make early rehabilitation and recovery a priority in the PICU. Creating, implementing and adopting PICU Liber8 required an extensive transformation in clinical practice and staff culture within the unit.

Not only are staff working cohesively, they’re working closely with families to achieve the best possible functional outcome and quality of life for children in the PICU.
